Skills

I am presently working as Assistant Professor and In-Charge, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Loreto College, Kolkata. I am also one of the Placement Officers of the College. My journey with media teaching started with Khudiram Bose Central College, Kolkata and Muralidhar Girls College, Kolkata. After a brief stint in these two places, I joined the Ph.D. programme at the Department of Mass Communication, The University of Burdwan as a UGC NET Junior Research Fellow. I was pursuing my Senior Research Fellowship when I got an opportunity to join as Assistant Professor (Guest Faculty) at the Department of Mass Communication, Central University of Jharkhand. After spending a year of memorable teaching experience among some eager knowledge seekers in the picturesque campus at Brambe, a 25 km drive from the Ranchi city, I returned to Kolkata to join as Assistant Professor and In-Charge, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication at Loreto College, Kolkata. The first male faculty in a substantive government post in a women’s college was another experience! Working amidst helpful colleagues it has been a worthwhile journey. Apart from my academic assignments in the college I have been engaged in some administrative roles. I took up the responsibility of the Placement Officer from 2015 and have been trying to facilitate the placement of the students of the college.

Interests

My passion for writing and interest in current affairs drew me to a course in Journalism. I completed my Master degree and Ph.D. from the Department of Mass Communication, The University of Burdwan. During my days of Post Graduation, I developed an interest in Transnational Television and its impact on the audience of developing countries. When I enrolled for my Ph.D. programme under the supervision of Prof Saswati Gangopadhyay, who specializes in television studies, I expressed my interest to work on Satellite Television and its impact on the audience in West Bengal. I also started developing interest in New Media driven by my initial days of working as a content writer. I can recall those days when we had to write thirteen to fourteen articles a day. I learnt about SEO and the role played by keywords and metadata. I started contributing articles to different journals exploring the developments happening in the world of transnational television and new media. In the coming days hopefully, I will be able to continue contributing to academic research in these areas! I was fortunate to publish some papers in national and international journals and contribute chapters in edited books. I got the opportunity to contribute to e-PG modules in Media and Communication Studies for the E-PG Pathshala Programme, MHRD-GOI, UGC and INFLIBNET and contribute online learning material for Open Universities. It was also a different experience to appear on television to talk on media and social issues. Mr Bhaskar Dhar of R Plus News Channel one fine morning felt that I should come to their studio to talk on media freedom. The journey started from there and I would occasionally receive a call from the channel to talk on issues. A vibrant team of young journalists and television technicians and an ever accommodative Bhaskar Dhar (Bhaskar Da) made things easier for me. I also got the opportunity to meet Mr Sujoy Dhar, group editor of India Blooms news service who imbued me to contribute articles for their news portal. He would always remind me that a journalism educator should never delink himself or herself from the actual practice. I have continued with my blog theviewsspectrum which intends to simplify news and add a spectrum of views on issues happening across the globe. Miles to go before I sleep !
